Strep Throat Family

All three of us have strep throat. Both Holly's and my quick tests came back positive yesterday and Lilly's culture came back positive today. I was home yesterday and kept Lilly home just in case. Today I went back to work after being on antibiotics and halfway through the day received the call that Lilly's culture came back positive. So another half day for Lilly and I.

Ironic strep statistic told to me by the Minute Clinic PA shortly before my test came back positive:

"20% of people affected with strep end up passing it on to their family members. Far fewer than most people think."

I guess we beat the odds.

T-Ball

Lilly had her first T-Ball class last night. It was cool enough weather to have the class inside in the gym - probably a little tight to have 4-5 year-olds whipping baseballs around. Lilly threw and caught really well!

Work Weekend

This weekend Holly's parents came up to help us with a house project. The middle pilings that support our house have been slowly sinking over the 20+ years since our house was built. We had to lay a concrete base wall in our crawlspace to support a future wood support wall. This weekend we hand-mixed and laid over 4,000 lbs of concrete.

By Saturday evening we were shot with sore throats from cement dust. Waking up early Sunday to ride MN Ironman in 45 degree, rainy, windy weather wasn't what we needed.

The positive side of this weekend is the concrete is done and we're ready to build up a support wall and start raising the center of the house.

Earth Day

Wednesday was Earth Day and Lilly's daycare had some activities planned. They painted Earths on coffee filters:

And dug for worms:

They also planted sunflower and had a hard time believing a plant taller than dad or Ms. Sarah would come out of a really small seed.

Holly went out for a 40 mile ride on Wednesday night and almost set a personal average speed record for her loop. She came in out of breath and said she really pushed the last part.

I went for a little night ride on a pleasant evening after Lilly was in bed. I didn't see a car-sized pothole and ended up in a heap in the gutter. Luckily the only damage was some slight road rash. Jeez... Maybe next time I'll take the extra 3 minutes and hook up my nice headlight system.

Here's how my friend Eric is celebrating Earth Day:

Biking the Secret Trails

Tuesday evening I met Dave Hoglund in the secret mountain bike park for some fun singletrack. His friend CJ and another guy named John was there as well. Dave and CJ hand shovel 7 miles of this secret trail in the winter so they can ride all year round. After the dirt we headed out backwards on the 144 to find the road group. Dave had an idea to come flying out of the ditch ala Roscoe P Coltrane from the Dukes of Hazzard when we saw them. Fun night.

Crafts and More

Lilly had the neighbor kids (Hailey, Jacob and Mia) over to play inside this afternoon. They ate cookies, played princesses, washed the walls and did crafts. They were also entertained by me balancing on the dock/boat lift while pushing all the driftwood off the dock.

Lilly and I went for a ride in the park with her on the tag along. We rode a little bit of the single track dirt trails and she alternated between loving it and wanting to go home.

Weekend

On Friday evening we went to an ice cream social hosted at MRS (Lilly's new school). There was a inflatable jumper and face painting:

After the school get together I headed out to celebrate Neil's 41st birthday. A good time at Maverick's and around the fire. Rode my bike home at 2 in the morning. What a different world with no cars.

Saturday I rode mountain bikes with Dave Hoglund and Bob Dahl in the morning. Thanks Dave for waiting for me and guiding me on your secret singletrack. Holly rode with Carol in the afternoon and her knee felt good. Lilly and I rode bike/tag-a-long to the park and then took Boo to the dog park:

Right now it's a cold, rainy Sunday and we're starting to wonder if we shut the heat off to early.

Butterfly

Pam (a coworker) gave me these butterfly wings to give to Lilly. Her brother had made them for her granddaughter but since she is one year old they didn't want her to keep the balloons and possibly gnaw on them. This is a little more advanced than twisting up a wiener dog. It took him 2 hours!

Oh. This just in. It's spring! The shop ride tonight was sunny and fast.

Easter

Down to NE Iowa to celebrate Easter and pick up Boo. We headed down to Waukon Friday evening and watched the video of Mom and Dad's trip to Florida. Looked like a great time.

Grandpa, Grandma and Lilly all went to the fitness center together Saturday morning. Dad looks great and Holly and I thought mom looked like she's lost weight also.

Boo was happy to see us:

Saturday Grandpa Bob took Lilly to the park on the motorcycle:

We left Waukon around noon and stopped by Subway on the way out of town. As we got out of the car I wondered to myself if I'd see someone I know inside. Was I surprised. I saw Jason Beneke, his wife and kids, his sister and his parents! It made me wish we weren't on the way to grandmas so we could talk a little longer. There's a chance we'll see them on RAGBRAI.

We noticed our Corolla had been leaking a tiny bit of oil in the garage Thursday and Friday. I had thought it was maybe just some drops left from when they changed the oil. Then we saw a few more drops in mom and dad's driveway in Waukon on Saturday morning. The oil level was still fine and I made a note to check it again after we got to Grandma's. About 10 miles from Manchester we heard a noise that sounded like a rock bouncing around under the car. Turns out it was the oil pan drain plug dropping out and flying into the ditch. We climbed out of the car in Grandma's driveway to see a trail of oil coming into the driveway and a rapidly growing puddle under the car! After a trip to the auto parts store for a new plug and some oil we had it running again. Whew!

Easter dinner at Sheryl's house on Saturday evening was great. Here are the pictures from the Easter Egg Hunt afterwards:

The family watches the hunt:

Boo and Carter played all weekend. Here they are hunting up some eggs:

We attended Easter services with Sheryl, Rick and Megan. Lilly even went up front and sang with the children:

Lilly was unhappy to leave Megan after having so much fun with her. They had a sleepover, dance shows and jumped on the trampoline. Here's a shot with crazy hair and some goodbye tears:

What a fun Easter weekend!

Thursday Ride / Birthday Drinks

Rode from the shop on a great day and then did birthday drinks afterwards. Saw Patrick Lewis for the first time since last year at this time. Jeff has been spinning over the winter and you can tell. Mark Connell was out too. Neil took a bike up superprime faster than anyone I've ever seen.

Thanks to Neil and Andy for the company and buying the drinks afterwards. Up until last night I didn't know bacon cheese fries existed.

Lilly's Busy Evening

Lilly had both gymnastics and soccer this evening. Her gymnastics class was a makeup class of the class we missed while skiing.

First gymnastics or "Twinklers". Here's the little kids gymnastics room. Lilly is jumping on the little trampoline and then doing the big foam roller:

For the last 15 minutes they go to the big gyms to either jump in the pit with foam cubes or jump on the super cool trampolines. Today was trampoline day. Check out Lilly doing the helicopter jumps (and the kids in the background doing flips with a 1/2 twist):

After gymnastics it was on to her first community education soccer class. Coach Mike was a great guy and they all seemed pretty enthusiastic about playing. Lilly did great and even won the "Sharks and Minnows" game with her sneaky strategizing.

Easter (Palm Sunday)

Lilly got a palm at church this weekend. She tried to play with it the entire service. Maybe that's why mom didn't let us get ours until after church.

Speaking of Easter, Lilly had two Easter events this weekend. First was the Easter Carnival at Holly's work. They pulled off getting the Easter Bunny and an inflatable jumping thing at the same event!

The second event was egg coloring. Here's some pics:

We're missing Boo. Grandma Julie sent some pictures of Boo and Morris (her cat). Awwww....Boo!

Loon Camp was Canceled

At least by us. The Preston forecast called for rain most of the day turning to snow with 4"-8" by Sunday morning. We called off camp in favor of riding locally. At least then we could call the ride and get home if the weather really headed south up here.

The ride was Neil's 90-mile Afton loop that had us coming out of the river valley for a few climbs. We totaled 95 miles with over 4,000 feet of climbing. It was a little cold at times but for the most part it was a fantastic ride. I am pretty tired right now. Everyone rode well. Jay was great and the RAAM guys are strong. Dave has been riding and it shows. Neil is always strong. Jorge had an off day and headed back early to take a nap in the parking lot. We were all treated to some treats for the eye and the tummy at the Bikery (Bike shop + bakery) in Stillwater. Great food and cool bikes and wall art.

An "Off the Bike" Off Season

Having Loon Camp this weekend made me realize how little biking I've done over the winter. I skied a lot, ran almost every day and did the elliptical a little but probably only rode inside 5 times. Quite a contrast to last year when I was prepping for RAAM.
